Five Timeless Lessons Modern Families Can Learn from 1940s Prairie Life
Modern households juggle overflowing calendars, pings from every device, and the constant tug-of-war between convenience and connection. Yet only eight
Bob Wahl, a fourth-generation Mennonite from rural Saskatchewan, learned perseverance fetching river water before dawn and farming by lamplight. In Bob the Prairie Son, he recreates those 1940s horse-drawn days, celebrating the quiet grit that shaped his lifelong faith and resilience.
Now a seasoned author and retired missionary, Bob shares his most personal story in Love Never Ends. When his wife Beverley faced a decade of dementia, Bob became her full-time caregiver. This tender memoir offers practical insight and unshakeable hope for families walking the same difficult road.
From prairie chores to Bible camps on three continents, Bob’s life gallops far beyond the farm fence. Contending with Horses chronicles that journey—entrepreneurial highs, mission fields in Europe and Ukraine, cancer, loss, and a faith that learns to “run with horses” when ordinary strength is not enough.

About the Book
Bob – The Prairie Son recounts Bob Wahl’s childhood on a Mennonite farm in drought-ridden Saskatchewan from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. Amid hard labor, brutal winters, and ingenious improvisation without electricity or plumbing, he learns resilience, faith, and community spirit. Stories of river trips, runaway machinery, schoolyard adventures, and evolving farm technology paint a vivid, humorous portrait of prairie life and the values that shaped a generation.
About the Book
Love Never Ends records Bob Wahl’s ten-year battle as primary caregiver when his wife Beverley develops vascular dementia. Blending diary excerpts, medical notes, and faith reflections, he traces her steady decline—from early disorientation and falls to full-time lifts, long-term care, and her peaceful passing on his 82nd birthday. The memoir offers practical guidance for caregivers while affirming that enduring love and Christian faith sustain grief and give suffering meaning.
About the Book
Contending with Horses charts Bob Wahl’s transformation from Saskatchewan farm boy to globe-roaming entrepreneur, Bible teacher, and missionary. Beginning with his Mennonite ancestors’ four-century trek from Holland through Russia to Canada, Wahl recounts nights praying beside a tractor, hitch-hiking to Bible school, marrying in Chicago, and launching a dizzying string of ventures—auto sales, jewelry, engine additives, import businesses—that finance ministry dreams.
Later, he pioneers youth camps in Germany and Austria and preaches in blackout-plagued Ukrainian churches. Cancer, depression, and his wife’s decade-long dementia devastate yet refine his steadfast, grace-anchored faith.

Bob Wahl’s novel “Love Never Ends” is about faith and unwavering love. Bob has served in the ministry and is the author of multiple books.
I read “Love Never Ends” and braced myself for heartbreak. This book tells the story of Bob’s wife of nearly 59 years, Bev, battle with dementia and how Bob got through such a trying period in his life. Despite its devastating nature, the novel was brimming with love. All I could feel while reading the book was Bob’s intense love for his wife. Bob showed resolve and an awareness that something was off. Even though he was told repeatedly that everything was normal with Bev’s results, he continued to take his wife to appointments, knowing something was wrong. Bob overcame this difficult period in his life by relying on his faith. It was a gritty book that provided readers with an honest synopsis of Bev’s dementia fight through excerpts from Bob’s journal. The passages of this book that I found most difficult to read were the ones where Bob was upset with himself for something he felt he should have done. Bob was a great husband and friend to his wife, loving her unconditionally.
The beginning of the book by author Bob Wahl was my favorite aspect of it. It discussed the depth of their shared life, including their family, love, travels, adventures, and faith. It established the framework for the book and emphasized how incredible their nearly 59 years together were.
I really like every aspect of the book and have found nothing I can critique.
I gave it a five out of five. Many of us have experienced dementia in a friend, loved one, or other close relative. This book provides insights into Bob’s faith, his interactions with the medical system, his humility, and his methods for keeping the family informed of developments and changes. It was expertly edited, with very few errors.
